HC-One’s Bowbridge Court Care Home, in Newark on Trent, celebrated the 100th birthday of one of its cherished residents, Jean Scarr, on Wednesday, July 16.
Born in 1925 in Hull, Jean’s milestone birthday was marked with heartfelt gatherings, music, memories, and tributes from family, friends, and the Bowbridge Court community.
Jean, who spent much of her life working in diverse roles including as a secretary at Premier Foods and as a comptometer operator, has always been proud of her Hull roots – a city she fondly calls home.
Beyond her professional achievements, Jean’s passions include baking, knitting, sewing, and being an active member of the Townswomen’s Guild, which all reflects a life filled with creativity.
Her loving family gathered to celebrate her special day as her daughter Allison, son-in-law Allan, grandchildren Alex and Grant, and great-grandchildren Annabelle and Aurelia were joined by Jean’s best friend Wyn, a former colleague from Hull, and several cousins.
The festivities began the day before her birthday with a special performance by a singer from the local group ‘Voices with Anna’, filling Bowbridge Court with songs and joy.
On the big day, Jean was greeted with a round of applause as she entered the Broadway Lounge, where a private lunch was hosted for her milestone birthday.
The event featured photobooks and storytelling, allowing everyone to share in the treasured memories of Jean’s remarkable 100 years.
Allison, daughter of Jean, said:
“All the surprises were wonderful – we didn’t expect so much for mum’s birthday. Everything was so great.”
When asked her secret to a long life, Jean said:
“I’ve simply done my best every day. The wonderful staff at HC-One’s Bowbridge Court have been spoiling me even more since I turned 100 with endless kindness.
“I guess all this attention and care is part of the reason I’ve made it this far!”
Debbie Cook, HC-One’s Bowbridge Court Care Home Manager, expressed her admiration for Jean:
“Jean is a truly inspiring member of our community. Reaching 100 years is a huge milestone, and we were delighted to celebrate this special day with her surrounded by those she loves. Her spirit and kindness enrich Bowbridge Court every day.”
