Residents and staff from Millcroft Care Home in Redditch recently had the delightful experience of attending ‘Tea with a Pony’ at Lowlands RDA Equestrian Centre. The event, which combines afternoon tea with the opportunity to meet and interact with rescued ponies, proved to be an unforgettable day for everyone involved.
Guests were welcomed into the indoor equestrian centre by staff and the friendly rescue pony, Tommy, who had been rescued by the Blue Cross alongside a companion pony and now enjoys a happy life at Lowlands. The tables were beautifully set with tea, coffee, cakes, and biscuits, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
After refreshments, the residents were invited into the arena to meet Tommy up close. Many residents reminisced about their own equestrian experiences, including Pat Tuckley, who recalled volunteering at the centre in her youth. Residents were able to stroke Tommy and enjoy a truly hands-on encounter with the gentle animal.
As a memento of the day, each participant received a custom-made rosette to take home. This marked the first ‘Tea with a Pony’ event of 2026, with more planned as the weather warms. The initiative, which began last year, runs until the first frost and has proven a popular highlight for local care home residents.
Sophie Poulton, Lifestyle Manager at Millcroft Care Home, said:
"It was an incredible, joyful experience for everyone involved. All the staff at the RDA were amazing and so welcoming. We will definitely be going back for another ‘Tea with a Pony’, the residents are already looking forward to it!"
Jennifer Skyba, Front of House Manager, added:
"It was lovely to see the residents taking part in such a unique event. They really enjoyed it, and their rosettes are already proudly displayed in their rooms!"
Residents attending included Pat Tuckley, Beryl Gower, and Mavis Booker, alongside carers Sophie Poulton and Aleena Josie, who all enjoyed a memorable day connecting with the ponies and each other.
