A resident at The Polegate Care Home in Polegate, East Sussex, has enjoyed a heartwarming and long-awaited day out, marking her first trip outside in three years following a stroke.
Penny Beresford, aged 82, a keen gardener, had not been able to enjoy outings for some time following her stroke. Staff were delighted to recently support her on a special trip to a local garden centre, making it a truly meaningful occasion.
During the visit, Penny was reunited with her daughter, who joined her for the occasion. Together, they spent the afternoon exploring a wide range of plants, with Penny sharing her passion for gardening and helping to select some beautiful additions for the care home. Penny also treated herself to a new cardigan during the trip, making the day even more memorable.
Other residents who joined the outing also had a wonderful time, enjoying the opportunity to get out and about and take in the wide selection of plants and items for sale.
Speaking about the experience, Penny said: “I really enjoyed my trip, especially being there with my daughter. It was lovely to look at all the plants again and help choose some beautiful ones for the home.”
Deborah Proctor, Wellbeing Coordinator at The Polegate Care Home added: “This was such a special moment for Penny and for all of us. Being able to support her to get out again after three years and do something she loves, surrounded by family, is exactly what person-centred care is all about.”
Staff at The Polegate Care Home say the trip highlights the importance of enabling residents to maintain their hobbies, independence, and family connections, as well as the positive impact meaningful outings can have on wellbeing.
This outing marks a significant milestone in Penny’s recovery journey and reflects the home’s ongoing commitment to enhancing residents’ quality of life.
