A much-loved resident at Coppice Court Care Home in Eastbourne, East Sussex, has found a heartwarming new sense of purpose thanks to a simple but meaningful daily role.
Roger Booth, who lives with Parkinson’s and previously had a career working as an Engineer, has taken on the important job of delivering post and newspapers to fellow residents – earning him the affectionate title of “Roger the Mailman”.
Parkinson’s has changed many things in Roger’s life. His movements can be slower now, his hands sometimes unsteady, and his legs need a bit of encouragement to get going but when the bundle of post and newspapers is placed into his hands, something shifts. He is no longer just Roger navigating Parkinson’s – he is Roger with a job to do.
Each morning, he carefully sets off down the corridor, one steady step at a time. The weight of the letters is light, but the responsibility feels significant. Stopping at each door, he offers a warm smile along with the morning paper, often staying for a friendly chat.
“These small conversations mean more than anyone realises,” said Tia Downer, Wellbeing Coordinator at the home. “You can see Roger’s confidence grow with every interaction. He isn’t just keeping his legs moving; he’s keeping connections alive. It’s wonderful to see how much this role means to him – and to everyone else.”
For Roger, the benefits are clear.
“It gives me a purpose, and I know I’m helping others,” he said. “It brings back some normality.”
His fellow residents agree. One shared: “It’s lovely to get my newspaper with a smile and a chat. I look forward to it every morning.”
The initiative highlights the importance of meaningful activity in care settings – not only supporting physical wellbeing, but also nurturing confidence, independence and social connection. By empowering residents like Roger to take on valued roles within the home, Coppice Court continues to create opportunities for people to feel useful, respected and part of a community.
At Coppice Court, sometimes it’s the smallest gestures – a knock at the door, a friendly smile, a morning newspaper – that make the biggest difference.
