Colleagues and Residents on the Allendale Unit, at HC-One’s Rosebridge Court care home, in Wigan have decided to make their weekly Saturday night takeaway into a healthier and tastier Saturday night "Fake Away."
Residents discussed what they would like to eat and with support from staff, have made their own healthier meal all have enjoyed eating a healthier and tastier option.
The Residents enjoyed the preparation and were proud of the finished result. The first week Residents chose to make chicken and salad wraps with homemade salsa and sweet potato wedges, cooked in the oven. There was lots to go round and all the comments were positive.
The following week, Residents requested to make their own meal again. Following a discussion, they decided to make chicken curry and lemon and coriander rice and low fat banoffee dessert made with Greek yogurt.
It was a joint effort by all concerned and a good feeling for Colleagues to see everyone enjoying the finished meal. The Residents were so proud of their contributions, also liked using the fresh ingredients. All reported enjoying the meals more than ordering.
One Resident said, “Delicious, I love the Salsa.”
Another added, “I like the spicy food.”
Cheryl Little, Home Manager, remarked “It’s great to see all our Residents so motivated for the ‘Fake Aways’ and daily exercises are going down a treat.”
“They were thinking of each other, making meals suitable for others requiring a diabetic diet and a soft diet. This may become a regular weekly activity.”
