Stockton-On-Tees care home honours resident on Armed Forces DayHC-One’s Victoria House Care Home, in Stockton-on-Tees, has proudly shone the spotlight on one of its remarkable residents, Paul William Stephenson, a former RAF National Serviceman as the nation celebrates Armed Forces Day on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

Born and raised in Hinderwell, North Yorkshire, Paul’s journey began with humble roots. After attending school in Loftus and night college in Middlesbrough, he apprenticed as a village joiner before answering the call to serve in the Royal Air Force, following in the footsteps of his two elder brothers.

His National Service began with basic training in Wales, but fate took a fortunate turn when a case of mumps kept him from being deployed to Christmas Island, where nuclear testing later led to devastating health consequences for many servicemen.

Paul was subsequently sent to Schleswig-Holstein on the Germany-Denmark border, a decision that likely saved his life. In Germany, Paul trained as a radar plotter, a role he found thrilling.

He played a critical part in detecting Russian aircraft, triggering the scrambling of squadrons to intercept them during tense Cold War moments. The experience was exhilarating for Paul, who had never been abroad before.

He embraced the opportunity to explore Europe, spending his leave skiing and camping in Denmark, Austria, and Italy, where he immersed himself in new cultures and adventures. However, Paul’s time in the RAF wasn’t without its quirks.

Paul learned to drive a large lorry under the watchful eye of a sergeant who insisted on teaching recruits to drive backwards in circles. After his discharge, Paul returned to Hinderwell, where he continued his work as a joiner and contributed to the construction of the iconic RAF Fylingdales Golf Balls on the North York Moors.

Paul Stephenson, HC-One’s Victoria House resident, stated:
"I'm quite proud of coming from a little village to suddenly find myself travelling, meeting all sorts of people, and serving in the Royal Air Force.
“It changed my whole outlook, and I enjoyed every bit of it. It gave me a chance to do something meaningful for the country, and this means a lot to me."
Paul later trained as a jeweller after a chance encounter in a cocktail bar, which he pursued until retirement. Throughout his life, Paul’s passion for making and repairing things extended to his love of boating, which he shared with his sons, and he remains supported by his devoted wife, who visits him regularly at Victoria House.

Hanna Naseer, HC-One’s Victoria House Wellbeing Coordinator, said:
“Paul’s story is one of courage and curiosity. His service in the RAF and his remarkable journey inspires us all, and we’re proud to celebrate him this Armed Forces Day. His experiences remind us of the sacrifices made by our armed forces and the incredible lives they lead.”

On Saturday, June 28, Victoria House Care Home will host a special event to honour Paul and all veterans.
