HC-One becomes the UK’s first care home provider to offer Gold Standard Nursing PreceptorshipThis recognition highlights HC-One's commitment to fostering a "competent, confident, and committed" nursing workforce through its Nursing Preceptorship Programme.

The prestigious National Interim Quality Mark for Gold Standard Nursing Preceptorship was awarded last month as HC-One met the ‘Gold Standard’ criteria, just six months after the programme was launched.

Investing in the future of Nursing care

HC-One launched its ‘Nursing Preceptorship Programme’ in September 2023, designed to develop and support new members of the Nursing community, while addressing the critical need to recruit and retain Nurses during sector-wide shortages.

The concept of preceptorship has been described as more important than ever, with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) advocating for a period of Preceptorship for newly-qualified Nurses and those registering in the UK for the first time.

Designed by the Senior Nursing Team at HC-One, the Programme is aligned with the NMC's Principles of Preceptorship, the NHS Gold Standard Framework for Preceptorship and Scotland’s Flying Start Programme

In just six months, the Nursing Preceptorship Programme has already:
          ●  Supported c.120 Preceptors
          ●  Produced c.60 Preceptees

Experienced mentorship nurturing success

HC-One’s Nursing Preceptorship Programme leverages a network of experienced Nurses who act as mentors, guiding and supporting Newly Qualified Nurses and Nursing Associates (Preceptees) on their professional journeys.

The programme takes an individualised learning approach and flexible timelines, providing each Preceptee with the support they need to flourish.

Supporting future leaders

Before becoming a Nurse in charge of a shift, Preceptees work with their Preceptor to sign off on clinical and leadership competencies. HC-One has a robust support network of experienced Nurses, including an on-call system where a more Senior Nurse is available 24/7 to offer advice or support to new Nurses on shift.

A commitment to continuous growth

After completing the Preceptorship Programme, Nurses continue to be supported by HC-One’s award-winning Learning and Development team to grow and progress in their careers.

This comprehensive programme has improved HC-One's ability to attract, develop, and retain top nursing talent, ultimately resulting in a more skilled and compassionate workforce dedicated to resident well-being.

This has been supported by newly qualified Nurses having the chance to benefit from competitive starting salaries, and a range of career pathways.

Sharon Burlace, Head of Nursing at HC-One, explains the importance of the Nursing Preceptorship Programme, and how much this award means to the team:

We’re extremely proud to be the first care home provider to be awarded the National Preceptorship Interim Quality Mark. This is testament to the commitment for excellent Preceptorship from our Nurses, regional and operations teams, who have supported and encouraged the development and progress of our Preceptorship Programme from the start, just six months ago.

“Preceptorship has been described in recent Nursing press as more important than ever to ensure a variety of Nurses at all levels are supported and encouraged to develop their confidence and competence. We’ve already supported 120 Nurses in the organisation through our workshop to become Preceptors.”

Desiree Cox, National Preceptorship Programme Lead at NHS England, said:

Congratulations to HC-One on achieving the National Preceptorship Interim Quality Mark for Nursing. This is an excellent achievement, particularly as you are the first social care organisation to achieve the award and demonstrates a clear commitment in caring for our newly registered Nurses.”

HC-One will continue to roll out the programme nationally, with four jobs available across Scotland and two across England.
