Three HC-One Colleagues and homes shortlisted for awards at the Scottish Care National Care Home AwaThree HC-One Colleagues and care homes across Scotland have been shortlisted as finalists by the judging panel at the Scottish Care National Care Home Awards 2022.

A record number of entries of an exceptionally high standard were received this year. The awards recognise the achievements of companies, Colleagues and Residents in the care home sector. The Scottish Care National Care Home Awards provide the opportunity to recognise the compassion, skills and professionalism of the care home workforce who deliver high-quality care and support for Residents across the country.

HC-One’s finalists for the Scottish Care National Care Home Awards 2022 are:

•    The McLelland Unit at Douglas View Care Home, finalists in the Specialist Service Unit of the Year Award Category at the Scottish Care Home Awards 2022
The McLelland Community at Douglas View Care Home is a 12 bedded unit for under 65-year-olds for those who have ARBD and/or Korsakoff as well as a Rehab Community.
The McLelland Community was severely affected during the pandemic, due to the care home restrictions that were imposed. This meant that Residents within the McLelland Community were no longer able to complete daily living activities that they once did. Their living environment became very restrictive due to the COVID-19 Guidelines. This resulted in an increase of distress behaviour, low mood, and concerns regarding skin.
Since the COVID-19 restrictions have eased, staff have worked extremely hard to help upskill the Residents within McLelland and encourage positive risk taking, helping Residents to get involved in daily living tasks to become more confident and independent e.g., cooking for themselves, washing their own clothing, ironing, going out into the community to their social club’s bingo, golfing and shopping.

•    Balcarres Care Home, finalists in the Care Home Service of the Year Award Category at the Scottish Care Home Awards 2022

Balcarres Care Home are an extraordinary and outstanding home. The team at the home are dedicated to delivering the kindest possible care, and work together to enhance the quality of life of Residents who choose to live at Balcarres.
Balcarres Care Home is led by Lynn McLean, Home Manager who has over 40 years of experience in providing care and support to older people. Lynn’s commitment and dedication to her role stands out. Her enthusiasm and energy as Home Manager are infectious and this translates in her team members. Lynn boosts morale and provides praise to her Colleagues.
From a Colleague perspective, Balcarres Care Home is a friendly and great place to work. Colleagues feel fully supported in their roles, are provided with regular training sessions and are encouraged to progress in their careers. This is demonstrated in the number of long service awards that Colleagues at Balcarres have received over the years for their commitment to the home.
Residents and Relatives admire the care and support given by Colleagues at the home on a daily basis.

•    Anne Stewart, Home Administrator at Blar Buidhe Care Home, finalist in the Ancillary and Support Staff Award Category at the Scottish Care Home Awards 2022
Anne was nominated by Blar Buidhe’s Home Manager, Donald McIntosh, for her outstanding contribution. Anne has been the Home Administrator for 30 years and, as such, she knows the home inside out.
Anne’s commitment, dedication and diligence has made Donald’s job as Home Manager so much easier. She is a reliable and trustworthy right-hand woman. She is dependable, compassionate and goes over and above for the home every day.

She is well known across the Stornoway community as the ‘face of Blar Buidhe’. She is often referred to as the gel that keeps everything at the home together, the rock of Blar Buidhe and the Queen of the Blar. She embodies care, professionalism and kindness and is a well worthy finalist of this award.

Maxine Smedley, Managing Director at HC-One - Scotland, commented:

“I am extremely proud that three HC-One Colleagues and care homes across Scotland are being recognised as finalists at the prestigious Scottish Care National Care Home Awards 2022. The pandemic has presented many challenges for our Colleagues and care homes but it has also highlighted the amazing work our Colleagues do in our homes, especially during the challenges of the pandemic.
“Our Colleagues have worked together to do so much to help, support and care for our Residents living in our care homes. Being named as finalists acknowledges their hard work and the kind care that they have shown to each other, Residents and Relatives, as well as the dedication and passion they show every day to ensure the people they support receive the best quality care.
“The awards highlight their acts of kindness, the great work they are doing in our homes and provide us with a chance to say thank you to them for the selfless work they continue to do every single day.”
